On June 14, 2021, the IRS updated its website: IRS Operations During COVID-19: Mission-critical functions continue, announcing plans to resume IRS normal collection casework processes—systemic and automated lien and levy programs—this summer. According to the IRS, this return to normal will “support integrity of the nation’s tax system.”[1]

On June 15, 2021, the IRS expects to start following up with those taxpayers who previously failed to respond to issued notices. Some of those taxpayers with 2020 and/or 2019 tax liabilities will receive notices that provides 30 days (45 days if located abroad) to either respond appropriately or pay their balances. Taxpayers who fail to respond or pay may face levies of Notice of Federal Tax Line filings beginning Aug. 15, 2021.

Also noteworthy in the updated website, the IRS emphasizes that it will resume its practice of sending notifications to the Department of State to exercise its authority to revoke the passports of taxpayers who have seriously delinquent tax debt. This is also projected to begin on July 15, 2021.
