In the press release, the Comptroller clarified that the extension is a necessary result of recent and pending state and federal legislation which impacts 2020 tax filings and provides additional economic relief for those taxpayers impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.¹ The Maryland state income tax filing and payment deadline extension is applicable to:
Moreover, according to the Comptroller, Maryland’s own recent passage of the RELIEF Act “required extensive revisions to previously released forms and software programs used by tax filers and tax software vendors.”² Indeed the Comptroller was quoted as stating,
“We’ve never before seen so many changes to the current year’s tax code in the midst of the tax filing season . . . We’re realistic about the burden this puts on taxpayers, tax preparers and our staff, which is why I’m taking this emergency action to extend the tax filing deadline to July 15.”³
